Why does smart technology have to be planned before drywall?

What does the neutral wire requirement mean in an older home?
Many homes built before the mid 1980s were wired with switch loops that never brought a neutral conductor to the switch box. Smart dimmers draw a small amount of standby current to keep their radio alive, and without a neutral they either will not work or they flicker LED fixtures. In practice we have three options. If the wall is open, we pull new three conductor cable from the fixture box to the switch, which is the clean fix. Where should access points and data drops go in a kitchen?
Stainless steel appliances, stone slabs and tile over cement board are all effective at blocking a 5 GHz signal, and a kitchen contains all three. We routinely find dead zones directly behind a refrigerator or on the far side of a full height quartz backsplash, which is exactly where a connected oven or a dishwasher sits. Can smart features be added after the remodel is finished?
Yes, but the cost and the compromises both rise. Plug in devices and battery sensors install anytime. Anything requiring a neutral conductor, a data cable or a hardwired shutoff valve means opening finished drywall, patching, texturing and repainting, which frequently costs more than the device itself would have during rough in.
What happens to my smart kitchen if the internet goes down?

Are touch or motorized faucets reliable enough for daily use?
Modern models from established manufacturers are reliable and they all retain a manual handle as a fallback. The practical requirements are a receptacle inside the sink cabinet for the transformer and enough clear space around the supply lines for the solenoid. We plan both during rough in so the cabinet interior stays usable.
