How much light do you actually need under a cabinet?

Plan on 200 to 400 lumens per linear foot of counter. Two hundred is a comfortable ambient glow for a kitchen that already has strong ceiling light; 400 is what you want over a primary prep zone or a dark countertop like honed black granite, which swallows light. Color temperature matters just as much. 2700K reads warm and matches incandescent trim, 3000K is the most common choice because it flatters both warm and cool cabinet finishes, 3500K feels crisp and clean, and 4000K starts to look commercial in a residential kitchen. Ask for CRI 90 or higher so raw chicken, produce, and spice colors read accurately instead of gray. Finally, mount the fixture toward the front edge of the cabinet bottom, roughly one third back from the door face. Mounting at the back wall throws a bright stripe up the backsplash and creates glare.

Tape, bar, or puck: which fixture type fits?

Fixture choice comes down to how the light lands and how much you are willing to spend on trim work. LED tape mounted inside an aluminum channel with a frosted diffuser gives the cleanest result: a continuous line of light with no visible dots and no hot spots reflecting off a polished quartz counter. Linear bars are a good middle ground, since they arrive prewired and link end to end with jumpers, though you will see small gaps between fixtures. Puck lights are the least expensive option and the least flattering, throwing overlapping scallops of light down the backsplash. Low profile hardwired strips sit flush against the cabinet bottom and suit shallow face frames. Whatever the type, the goal is the same: hide the source, light the work surface, and keep the fixture out of sight from a seated position at the island.

  • Tape plus channel: The cleanest look, with a continuous lit line and no visible diodes hiding behind a frosted diffuser lens.
  • Linear bars: Prewired fixtures that link end to end, quick to install, with small dark gaps at each joint between units.

Will your dimmer actually work with the driver?

Dimming is where under-cabinet projects go wrong, and it is almost always a compatibility problem rather than a defective fixture. Low voltage LED tape runs on a driver, and that driver has to match the wall control. ELV, also called reverse phase, is the smoothest and quietest pairing for most residential tape. TRIAC, or forward phase, works with common incandescent style dimmers but tends to flicker at the bottom of the range and can buzz. 0 to 10V is the most stable and dims deepest, though it requires a separate control pair pulled back to the switch, so it is easier to plan during a remodel than to retrofit. We confirm the driver, the dimmer, and the fixture are on the same compatibility list before anything gets mounted, and we size the driver with headroom so it is not running at full capacity all evening.

Does Title 24 apply to under-cabinet lighting?

Yes, in most cases. California Title 24 Part 6 treats permanently installed kitchen lighting as a regulated load, which means the fixtures must be high efficacy and, for LED sources, JA8 certified with the certification mark printed on the product. Kitchen lighting also has to be controlled by a dimmer or a vacancy sensor, so a plain toggle switch will not satisfy an inspector on permitted work. Plug in strips that cord into an existing receptacle live in a different category and are the common choice when a homeowner wants a reversible upgrade, but the cord is visible and the outlet stays occupied. Hardwired is the better long term answer: the wiring disappears into the cabinet, the driver hides in a base cabinet or above a soffit, and the whole run answers to one control. We spec JA8 listed product by default.

What makes older tract kitchens different?

Anaheim and Garden Grove are full of 1950s and 1960s tract kitchens where the wall cabinets meet a shallow plaster soffit and the only nearby power is a two wire ungrounded circuit feeding a countertop receptacle with no GFCI protection. That changes the plan. We do not tie low voltage drivers into an ungrounded branch circuit; instead we trace back to the panel, evaluate whether a dedicated circuit is the cleaner path, and bring the countertop receptacles up to current GFCI requirements while the wall is open. Soffits actually help, because the void above the cabinet often gives a concealed route for the driver and the low voltage runs. Where there is no soffit, we drop wiring behind the backsplash before tile goes on, or fish down through the cabinet stiles. New circuits and panel work trigger a permit, and we pull it.

Not always. What color temperature should I choose for under-cabinet lights?

Why does my under-cabinet lighting flicker when I dim it?

The dimmer and the LED driver are almost certainly mismatched. Most flicker comes from a forward phase TRIAC dimmer driving a load below its minimum wattage, or from a driver that was never listed as compatible with that control. Swapping to an ELV dimmer with a matched driver resolves nearly every case.

Can you install under-cabinet lighting without removing the backsplash?

Yes, in most kitchens. We fish low voltage wiring down through cabinet stiles, along the underside of the cabinet, or up into a soffit, which avoids cutting finished tile. If your backsplash is already coming off for other work, running the wiring is faster and completely concealed behind the new surface.

Is LED tape better than puck lights?

For task lighting, yes. Tape in an aluminum channel gives one even line of light across the whole counter, while pucks throw overlapping bright and dark scallops onto the backsplash. Pucks still make sense for accenting a glass front cabinet or lighting a short segment where a channel would look heavy.

How long do LED under-cabinet fixtures last?

Quality LED tape and bars are rated between 40,000 and 50,000 hours, which is well over a decade of normal kitchen use. Heat is the real enemy, so an aluminum channel that sinks heat away from the diodes and a driver running below its maximum load both extend usable life considerably.
