Tile Shower Installation in Orange County

A tile shower is a small building assembly that gets soaked several times a day for thirty years, and it is the highest risk installation in a house. When it fails it does not announce itself: water passes the grout, reaches an unprotected substrate, and rots framing or feeds mold behind finished walls for a year or more before a ceiling stain appears downstairs. Orange County has a great many second floor bathrooms above living space, which makes that failure mode expensive. Everything we do on a shower is organized around a single principle: the waterproofing is a continuous system behind the tile, it is proven with water before it is covered, and every penetration through it is treated as a deliberate detail rather than a hole to be caulked.

How Does a Shower Pan Actually Drain?
Water that gets past the grout has to run somewhere, and that somewhere is a sloped plane beneath the tile leading to weep openings at the drain. In a traditional mortar bed shower this is achieved with a preslope, a first layer of deck mud sloped at 1/4 inch per foot toward the drain, over which the PVC or CPE pan liner is draped and clamped into a two piece drain body. A second mortar bed goes over the liner, also sloped, and the tile sits on that. The weep holes in the drain body are what let the water sitting on the liner escape, and they must be protected with gravel or spacers so mortar does not seal them. The most common failure in older Orange County showers is a liner laid flat on a level deck with no preslope, which turns the pan into a bathtub that holds standing water against the framing indefinitely. Bonded systems reverse the sequence: a preformed sloped foam tray or a sloped mud bed is built first, the waterproof membrane bonds to its surface, and the tile bonds directly to the membrane, so there is no water below the barrier at all.
Which Waterproofing System Do We Specify and Why?
We choose by geometry, schedule and what is being tied into. Schluter Kerdi sheet membrane over a sloped bed or a Kerdi tray is our default for conventional showers, because a sheet has a known thickness everywhere and there is nothing to measure or judge in the field. Wedi and Kerdi Board foam panel systems replace the backer board entirely with a waterproof core, which makes them the right call for curbless entries, built in benches, oversized niches and any shower where we want fewer transitions between different materials. Liquid membranes, Custom RedGard and Laticrete Hydro Ban being the two we use most, are excellent on complex geometry, irregular framing and retrofits where a sheet would have to be cut into a dozen pieces, and they demand discipline: two coats to the manufacturer wet film thickness, fabric or preformed corners at every change of plane, and a cure period before flood testing. What we never do is mix systems, because the moment a Kerdi band is bonded with a liquid membrane from a different manufacturer, no warranty covers the seam and no one can say whether the chemistry is compatible.
- Sheet membrane: Consistent thickness by construction, fast on rectangular showers, seamed with 5 inch bands and preformed corners.
- Foam panel systems: Waterproof structural board. Best choice for curbless showers, benches, large niches and minimizing material transitions.
- Liquid membrane: Ideal on irregular geometry and retrofits. Requires measured wet film thickness and reinforcement at every corner.
- One system only: Membrane, bands, corners, sealants and drain all from the same manufacturer, so the warranty and the chemistry stay intact.
How Is a Shower Niche Waterproofed and Sloped?
A niche is a hole cut through the wet wall of a shower, which makes it the most penetration dense detail in the entire assembly and the place where sloppy work shows up as a leak first. Correct construction starts with framing the opening with blocking on all four sides so nothing flexes, then waterproofing the niche as a continuous extension of the wall membrane, with the membrane wrapping into the back of the niche and out onto the face without a break at any corner. Every inside and outside corner in a niche gets a preformed corner piece or reinforced fabric, and there are eight of them in a simple rectangular niche. The sill, the bottom shelf, is sloped forward at roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot so water drains back into the shower rather than pooling against the back wall, and that slope is built into the substrate before waterproofing, not created with extra mortar under the tile. The sill tile is set as a single piece where possible, pitched, with the front edge finished by a mitered return or a metal profile. The junction where the niche meets the field tile is a change of plane, so it gets sealant rather than grout.
What Does the Flood Test Prove, and When Does It Happen?
The flood test is the only moment in the project when the waterproofing can be verified while it is still possible to fix. After the membrane is complete and cured, we plug the drain, fill the pan with water to just below the top of the curb, mark the water line, and leave it for 24 hours. If the level holds and nothing appears on the ceiling or wall below, the barrier is continuous. If it drops, we find and repair the failure while it costs an hour rather than a bathroom. We photograph the fill, the water line at the start and the water line at the end, and that photo set goes into your closeout package. Curbless showers are tested with a temporary dam. This test is a code requirement for shower receptors in California, and it is also the single most informative thing a homeowner can ask a tile contractor about. If a bid does not include a flood test, the contractor is planning to cover the most critical layer of the assembly without ever confirming it works.
Curb, Curbless or Linear Drain: What Changes?
A traditional curbed shower with a center point drain is the least expensive and most forgiving configuration, because the pan slopes from four directions toward one point and the curb contains the water. The curb itself must be waterproofed on all three faces as a continuous wrap, and it is never fastened through from the inside after waterproofing. A linear drain moves the drain to one edge, usually against the wall or at the entry, which lets the entire floor slope in a single direction. That single plane is what makes large format tile possible on a shower floor, since a four way slope forces small tile or mosaic to conform. A curbless shower brings the finished shower floor flush with the bathroom floor, which is the strongest accessibility feature in a bathroom and the most demanding to build: the framing has to be recessed or the whole bathroom floor raised, the waterproofing has to extend well beyond the shower opening, and the slope has to be right in a single pass because there is no curb to catch an error. On a slab, recessing means saw cutting and re pouring the concrete, which is real structural work and belongs in the estimate from day one.

- Fixture trim, glass coordination and cleanup: Valve trim and shower heads installed, penetrations sealed correctly, glass enclosure measurement coordinated after tile, and the space cleaned and haze free.

What moves the price
- Curbless construction: Recessing a slab by saw cutting and re pouring, or raising a bathroom floor to meet a recessed pan, is the single largest cost jump available in a shower project.
- Shower size and wall height: Tiling to the ceiling instead of stopping at 78 inches adds meaningful square footage of both waterproofing and tile on every wall of the enclosure.
- Niches, benches and shelves: Each one adds framing, a set of waterproofed corners, careful slope work and hand fitted trim. A double niche with a bench is several days of detail work.
- Tile format and material: Large format walls need leveling systems and two people per piece. Mosaic floors take far more setting time per square foot. Stone adds sealing and setting material requirements.
- Plumbing changes: Moving a drain, converting to a linear drain, or changing from a tub to a shower brings a licensed plumber, a permit and possible slab work into the scope.

How long does a tile shower last?
A correctly waterproofed shower should last as long as the bathroom around it, commonly 20 to 30 years or more, with periodic sealant replacement at the changes of plane. Showers that fail early almost always failed at construction: no preslope, discontinuous membrane, or waterproofing that was never flood tested.
Can you build a shower without a curb?
Yes, and it is the strongest accessibility feature you can put in a bathroom. It requires recessing the framing or the slab so the shower floor sits below the bathroom floor, waterproofing that extends well past the opening, and a single plane slope that is right the first time. On a slab, expect saw cutting and a re pour.
Is a linear drain worth the extra cost?
It is if you want large format tile on the shower floor, because a single direction slope lets big tile lie flat while a center drain forces a four way slope that only small tile or mosaic can follow. It also produces a cleaner look and works particularly well with curbless entries.
Do you flood test every shower?
Yes, without exception, and we photograph the water line at the start and at 24 hours. It is a California code requirement for shower receptors and it is the only opportunity to prove the waterproofing is continuous while it can still be repaired easily. The documentation goes into your closeout package.
What size tile is best for a shower floor?
On a four way sloped pan with a center drain, 2 inch mosaic or smaller, because the sheets conform to the slope and the extra grout adds traction. With a linear drain and a single plane slope, larger formats become possible. Either way, check the DCOF slip rating on the tile data sheet.
Why did my old shower leak if the grout looked fine?
Because grout was never the barrier. Water passes through grout by design and lands on the waterproofing behind the tile. If the shower was built with no membrane, a flat pan liner with no preslope, or a membrane that stopped short at a corner, the water reaches the framing regardless of grout condition.
Can I have a shower bench and a niche?
Yes, and both are worth having. Each adds framing, waterproofed corners and slope detailing, so they add days rather than hours. We build benches with a slight pitch back into the shower so water sheds, and we place niches to land on a grout line in the tile coursing rather than mid tile.
