Every tile installation is an assembly, not a surface. From the structure outward it runs substrate, then movement accommodation, then waterproofing where water is present, then bond coat, then tile, then grout, then sealant at the changes of plane. Each layer has a job, and the finished appearance tells you almost nothing about whether the layers beneath it were built correctly. This is why tile is the trade where the difference between a low bid and a properly built assembly is largest, and also the trade where homeowners have the least ability to inspect what they bought. Orange County brings a specific set of substrate conditions to the work. The dominant residential foundation is a concrete slab poured on grade, and concrete is a material that shrinks as it cures, cracks in response to that shrinkage, and continues to move seasonally as the soil beneath it takes on and gives up moisture. Tile is rigid, brittle and bonded, so any lateral movement in the slab transfers directly into the tile and grout unless a layer is introduced to interrupt it. The clay soils across large parts of central and north Orange County are expansive, which amplifies that seasonal movement, and the region is seismically active on top of it. None of that makes tile a poor choice here. It makes crack isolation and movement joints non negotiable rather than optional.
The second regional factor is water. Orange County showers get heavy daily use, our building stock includes a great many second floor bathrooms sitting directly above finished ceilings, and a shower that leaks slowly can cause tens of thousands of dollars of damage before anyone notices a stain. Waterproofing is therefore the single most consequential decision in a tile bathroom, and it is the one most often misunderstood by homeowners, who reasonably assume that tile and grout are what keep water out. They are not. Tile and grout are the wear surface; the waterproofing membrane behind them is the barrier, and if that barrier is absent or discontinuous, water travels through the grout into whatever sits behind it.

Where Does Waterproofing Actually Belong in a Shower?
Behind the tile, never in it. Grout is a cementitious material with measurable porosity, and even a well sealed grout joint passes water vapor and liquid water over time. In a correctly built shower the tile and grout are the wear surface and the decorative face, while a continuous waterproof membrane immediately behind them is the actual barrier that returns water to the drain. Four system families dominate current work. Sheet applied membranes such as Schluter Kerdi bond to the substrate with unmodified thinset and are seamed with overlapped bands. Liquid applied membranes such as Custom RedGard or Laticrete Hydro Ban are rolled or troweled on in two coats to a specified wet film thickness, with fabric reinforcement at corners and changes of plane. Bonded foam board systems such as Wedi and Schluter Kerdi Board replace the backer board and the membrane with one waterproof panel, sealed at seams and fasteners. Traditional mortar bed showers with a PVC or CPE pan liner remain valid under the TCNA Handbook, but they require a preslope beneath the liner and weep holes kept clear at the drain, and they are far less forgiving of a careless hand.

What Mortar Coverage Does ANSI Require, and How Do We Verify It?
The ANSI A108 specifications set minimum mortar contact between the tile and the substrate, and the numbers are specific: 95 percent coverage in wet areas and exterior installations, and 80 percent coverage in dry interior areas, with full support at all corners and edges of every tile in both cases. Those thresholds exist because voids are where failures start. A hollow spot under a shower floor tile holds water indefinitely. A void under the corner of a floor tile is where a cracked tile begins the first time someone drops a cast iron pan. Coverage is not something you can judge by looking at a finished floor, so it is verified during setting by periodically pulling a freshly set tile back up and examining the mortar transfer on its back. That pull check happens at the start of every area and whenever the tile, the mortar batch or the trowel changes. Achieving 95 percent on a large tile requires backbuttering, which means skimming a thin layer of mortar onto the back of the tile in addition to the notched bed on the substrate, then setting the tile with a slight back and forth motion perpendicular to the notch ridges so the ridges collapse into full contact rather than trapping air.
Why Do Movement Joints Matter More Than the Grout You Choose?
More cracked grout is caused by missing movement joints than by bad grout, and the fix people usually attempt, which is regrouting the crack, guarantees the crack returns. TCNA detail EJ171 is the governing document, and it requires movement joints, which are joints filled with flexible sealant instead of rigid grout, at every point where the tile field is restrained or where a different material begins. That means the perimeter of every floor where tile meets a wall, around every column, curb and pipe penetration, over every existing control and expansion joint in the concrete slab beneath, at every change of plane including inside corners in a shower, and at intervals across large fields. The interior field interval is commonly 20 to 25 feet, tightening to 8 to 12 feet in exterior installations or interiors exposed to direct sunlight through large glass, which describes a great many Orange County great rooms with west facing sliders. Perimeter joints are hidden by base molding or a shoe, so they cost nothing visually. Skipping them costs a floor.
- Perimeter joints: Flexible sealant, not grout, wherever tile meets a wall, curb, column or threshold. Hidden under base, so there is no aesthetic cost.
- Field joints: Every 20 to 25 feet in interior installations, tightening to 8 to 12 feet outdoors or under strong direct sun through glass.
- Over existing slab joints: Any control or expansion joint in the concrete has to continue up through the tile in the same location, at the same width.
- Changes of plane: Inside corners, floor to wall junctions and countertop to backsplash junctions all get sealant rather than grout.
What Is Lippage, and What Tolerance Is Realistically Achievable?
Lippage is the height difference between the edges of two adjacent tiles, and it is the defect homeowners notice most because raking light exposes it and bare feet find it. The ANSI standards allow lippage of up to 1/32 inch plus the inherent warpage of the tile for narrow grout joints under 1/4 inch, and up to 1/16 inch plus warpage for wider joints, which sounds generous until you realize that large format tile is not flat to begin with. Most large porcelain is manufactured with a slight crown along its length, so a 12 by 24 plank set in a running half bond puts the high center of one tile against the low end of its neighbor, producing lippage that no amount of skill eliminates. That is the reason the industry moved to a maximum 33 percent offset on tiles longer than 15 inches instead of the traditional 50 percent brick pattern. Reducing lippage further requires three things working together: a substrate flat to 1/8 inch in 10 feet, a mortar bed thick enough to allow adjustment, and a mechanical leveling system that clamps adjacent tile edges to the same plane while the mortar cures. Wider grout joints also help, because a joint has to visually absorb the transition.
How Do Trowel Notch Size and Tile Thickness Relate?
The notched trowel meters how much mortar goes on the wall or floor, and choosing it correctly is the difference between coverage and a callback. The principle is straightforward: the larger and flatter the tile, and the less flat the substrate, the more mortar you need, which means a deeper notch. A 2 inch mosaic sheet sets fine on a 3/16 inch V notch. Standard 12 by 12 and 12 by 24 tile typically calls for a 1/4 by 3/8 inch square notch. Large format tile over 15 inches usually needs a 1/2 by 1/2 inch square notch or a euro notch, often paired with a medium bed mortar rated as a large and heavy tile mortar under ANSI A118.15, which resists slumping and can be built up more than 1/4 inch after compression without shrinking. Thin porcelain panels reverse the logic and need a shallow notch on both surfaces with careful backbuttering, because the panel cannot tolerate voids. Direction matters too: notch ridges are combed in straight parallel lines so air can escape as the tile collapses them, never in swirls, which trap air pockets that become hollow spots.
What Belongs Between an Orange County Slab and Your Tile?
A separation layer, in nearly every case. Concrete cracks, and a crack that opens 1/16 inch in a slab will telegraph up through a bonded mortar bed and split the tile directly above it. ANSI A118.12 defines the performance standard for crack isolation membranes, and products meeting it are tested for their ability to bridge a moving crack up to 1/8 inch without transferring the movement to the tile. Two approaches are common. A liquid or sheet applied crack isolation membrane bonds fully to the slab and absorbs lateral movement within its own thickness. An uncoupling membrane, typically a dimpled polyethylene sheet, mechanically separates the tile from the slab so the two can move independently in plane while the dimples still transfer load vertically. Uncoupling membranes carry a second advantage on Orange County slabs: they tolerate residual moisture in the concrete far better than a directly bonded installation, which matters on a slab that has never been tested. Neither product substitutes for movement joints, and no membrane bridges a structurally active crack where one side of the slab is heaving relative to the other. That is a foundation question, not a tile question.
Epoxy or Cementitious Grout: Which Belongs Where?
Cementitious grout is portland cement based, comes sanded for joints 1/8 inch and wider and unsanded for narrower joints, and modern high performance versions include polymers that dramatically improve stain resistance and color consistency over the builder grade product most people remember. It is easy to work, easy to repair, forgiving of a slow installer, and it remains porous enough to warrant sealing in some applications. Epoxy grout replaces cement with resin and hardener, producing a joint that is essentially nonporous, chemically resistant, colorfast and never needs sealing. It is the right specification for a steam shower, a kitchen backsplash behind a range, a laundry room and any glass installation where a cement grout would look chalky against the glass. It costs several times as much in material, requires a much faster and more disciplined cleanup because it hardens on the tile surface, and it is unforgiving on textured or highly absorbent tile faces where residue can lock into the texture. Single component urethane grouts sit between the two, offering near epoxy stain resistance with cement grout workability, at the cost of a longer cure before water exposure.
What Does Natural Stone Demand That Porcelain Does Not?
Stone is a geological material with variation, porosity and chemistry that manufactured tile does not have, and every one of those attributes changes the installation. Marble, limestone and travertine are calcium carbonate, which means they etch on contact with anything acidic, and etching is a physical dulling of the surface rather than a stain, so no sealer prevents it. Travertine arrives with natural voids that are either factory filled or left open for a rustic look, and filled travertine loses fill over time in traffic and needs periodic refilling. Many stones are moisture sensitive: green marbles warp when set in water based cement mortars and require an epoxy setting material, and light colored translucent stones telegraph the trowel pattern and any variation in the mortar behind them, so they are set with white mortar in a full bed rather than a notched one. Stone needs sealing with an impregnating penetrating sealer before grouting to keep pigment out of the surface, and again after, then reapplied on a schedule that runs roughly annually in wet areas and every two to five years on interior floors depending on the stone and traffic. Structurally, stone also requires stiffer substrates, at L over 720 deflection instead of the L over 360 that ceramic and porcelain accept.
How Do Edges, Corners and Terminations Get Finished?
The tile edge is where a job announces its level of care, and there are three legitimate approaches. A bullnose is a factory finished rounded edge in a matching tile, which is the traditional solution and the simplest, though it is increasingly unavailable because most current porcelain lines do not produce trim pieces. A mitered outside corner cuts both tiles at 45 degrees so the glazed faces meet in a crisp line with no visible edge, which is the highest end result, requires a rail saw and a skilled hand, and produces a corner that is somewhat vulnerable to chipping if it takes a direct hit. A metal or PVC profile, most commonly a Schluter Jolly, Rondec or Quadec, caps the tile edge in anodized aluminum, brass or stainless and is set into the mortar as the tile goes in rather than added afterward. Profiles are the most durable and are the correct answer at any corner that will take abuse, at the top edge of a wainscot, and wherever tile terminates against drywall. What is never acceptable is a raw cut edge left exposed, or a bead of caulk smeared over one to hide it.

How do you finish an exposed tile edge?

How long does tile need to cure before I use the shower?
Plan on the mortar curing before grouting, usually 24 hours, then a further period after grouting before water exposure. Cementitious grout typically needs 72 hours, epoxy about 24, and urethane grouts often require a full week before the shower is used. Follow the specific product instruction, not a general rule.
Can you tile over existing tile?
Sometimes on walls and floors where the existing tile is fully bonded, flat and clean, and the height gain is acceptable. It is never appropriate in a shower, because you would be building over an unknown or absent waterproofing layer. In showers, we take everything back to the studs.
What is a flood test and do I need one?
It is filling the finished shower pan with water to just below the curb for 24 hours and confirming the level has not dropped and nothing below has stained. It is the only way to prove the waterproofing is continuous while it is still accessible. We do it on every shower and photograph the result.
How much waste should I order?
Around 10 percent for a straight grid layout in a simple room, 15 percent for a diagonal or offset pattern, and 20 percent or more for herringbone, chevron and rooms with many angles. Order all of it in one lot up front, because dye lots vary and a matching reorder six weeks later is unlikely.
Can tile be installed over a wood subfloor?
Yes, with attention to stiffness. The floor system needs deflection no greater than L over 360 for ceramic and porcelain and L over 720 for natural stone, which sometimes means adding a layer of plywood or sistering joists. Then a cement backer board or membrane goes over the plywood before tile.
How long does a tile shower take to build?
Typically 7 to 12 working days from demolition to walkthrough for a standard shower, and longer for curbless entries, multiple niches or intricate patterns. The schedule includes fixed waiting periods that cannot be compressed: membrane cure, a 24 hour flood test, mortar cure and grout cure before use.
