Why Does Composite Need Tighter Joist Spacing Than Wood?

Composite boards are stiffer than they feel but less rigid in bending than an equivalent piece of dry softwood, and they soften slightly at high surface temperature, which Orange County summers deliver reliably. First generation uncapped composite was wood flour and plastic with the wood exposed at the surface, so it absorbed water, hosted mold in shaded areas, faded unevenly and stained from anything oily. Capped composite wraps that core in a co extruded polymer shell on three or four sides, which is what delivers the modern fade, stain and mold warranties. Four sided caps cost more and are worth it on decks where board edges are visible, such as open riser stairs and picture frame borders. Within the capped category, the differences that actually show up over time are shell thickness, the realism of the embossing, and whether the color is a solid tone or a multi tonal streaked pattern. Solid colors show scratches less. Streaked patterns hide dirt better. Neither is objectively superior.

Does Composite Decking Get Too Hot in Orange County?

It gets hotter than wood, and color drives the difference far more than brand does.
