Tempered or Laminated: Which Glass Belongs in the Opening?
Tempered glass is heat-treated to roughly four times the strength of annealed glass at the same thickness, and when it does break it fragments into small granular pieces instead of shards. Laminated glass bonds two or more plies around a polyvinyl butyral or SentryGlas interlayer, so a broken lite holds together and stays in the opening rather than leaving it. Both qualify as safety glazing. The choice comes down to what happens after a failure and what else the glass has to do. Laminated is the correct answer wherever fall protection matters, wherever acoustic performance is part of the goal, and wherever security or forced entry is a real concern, because the interlayer both damps sound and holds the assembly together. Tempered is lighter, less expensive and entirely appropriate for a partition in the middle of a house. Laminated tempered combines both properties and is common on large lites.

Where Does Code Require Safety Glazing?
The California Residential Code and California Building Code both define hazardous locations where safety glazing is mandatory, and interior glass walls land in several of them at once. Glazing in and adjacent to doors, glazing in walls enclosing tubs and showers, glazing at the bottom of and adjacent to stairways, and large panels near the floor all require it. The common threshold for a fixed panel is glass larger than 9 square feet with a bottom edge below 18 inches, a top edge above 36 inches, and a walking surface within 36 inches horizontally. Most interior partitions satisfy every one of those conditions, so the practical answer is that a residential glass wall is safety glazing, without exception worth arguing about. Panels have to carry a permanent manufacturer identification mark, which the inspector will look for. Glass serving as a guard at a change in elevation carries additional requirements and generally has to be laminated.
Why Must Every Hole Be Cut Before Tempering?
Tempering is the final step in fabrication, and once it is done the glass cannot be cut, drilled, notched or edge-worked at all. Attempting any of it does not chip the panel, it shatters the entire lite instantly. That single fact reorders the whole project. Every hole for a hinge, patch fitting, handle, standoff or lock, every notch at a floor channel, every cutout and the final dimensions have to be settled before the glass goes into the furnace. Field measurement therefore happens after the opening is framed, plumbed and squared, never from a drawing, and any change to that opening after the order is placed means new glass and another two to four weeks of lead time. Large lites carry one more consideration. Heat-soaked tempered glass goes through a secondary thermal cycle that induces failure in panels containing nickel sulfide inclusions, reducing the rare risk of spontaneous breakage after installation.
What Framing and Structure Does a Glass Wall Need?
A non load bearing interior glass partition needs a plumb, square and rigid opening, which is a considerably higher standard than a drywall wall ever has to meet. Glass reveals deflection and out-of-square immediately, so header, jambs and floor track have to be true within a tight tolerance, and the floor has to be flat because a channel-set panel telegraphs any hump beneath it. In older Orange County tract homes in Santa Ana and Garden Grove where floors have moved over sixty years, that often means leveling the substrate before the opening gets framed at all.
