Why does every granite slab look different?
Granite is quarried, not manufactured, so appearance comes from geology rather than a recipe. Slabs are cut sequentially from a single block, which means pieces one through six will look closely related while piece twenty from another block of the same commercial name may look like a different stone entirely. Commercial names describe a quarry and a general look, not a guaranteed pattern. That is why choosing granite from a two inch sample is a mistake. The realistic approach is to visit a slab yard, look at full slabs standing on the rack, and tag specific pieces under your name. The yards in Anaheim and Santa Ana carry the widest local inventory, and we schedule those visits with clients so a fabricator can confirm the tagged slabs will yield your layout.
- View the whole slab: Racked slabs are lit from the side, so walk the full length and check how movement changes from one end to the other.
- Check yield against layout: Bring your rough dimensions so the yard can confirm your island and perimeter both fit without forcing an unplanned second slab.
- Look for pits and fissures: Natural voids and hairline crystal separations are normal in granite, but you should see them before you buy, not after install.
- Tag the exact pieces: Slabs get labeled with your name and held for fabrication, which guarantees the stone you approved is the stone that gets cut.
How often does granite actually need sealing?
Less often than folklore suggests, and the stone will tell you. Absorption varies enormously across granites: a dense black absolute absorbs almost nothing and may never need sealer, while a light, coarse grained stone with visible feldspar can drink water within a minute. The water drop test settles it. Leave a tablespoon of water on the surface for fifteen minutes, wipe it away, and look. If the stone darkened, the sealer has worn and it is time to reapply. If the water beads and leaves no mark, do nothing. We finish every install with a 15 year impregnating sealer that penetrates the stone rather than coating it, and most kitchens then need attention every three to five years, focused around the sink and cooktop where cleaning is most frequent.
- Dense dark granites: Absolute blacks and tight grained stones absorb almost nothing and often go a decade or more without any reapplication.
- Mid range speckled granites: The common tan and grey stones typically want a fresh coat every three to five years, sooner around the sink base.

Is granite radioactive or unsafe in a kitchen?
No. The radon claim resurfaces every few years and has never held up under measurement. All rock contains trace uranium, granite included, but emission from a countertop is a small fraction of normal background exposure and far below anything regulators treat as actionable. What is worth knowing is how the stone performs day to day. Granite sits around 6 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it resists scratching from most kitchen tools, and it tolerates direct heat well enough that a hot pan will not mark it. Many light colored and exotic slabs arrive resin treated from the quarry, meaning a thin resin is applied and cured to fill micro fissures and strengthen the slab. That treatment is standard, improves handling, and slightly reduces absorption.
What edge profiles work best on granite?
Granite takes a deeper edge profile than most surfaces, because the material is thick and the mineral pattern continues through the stone. A standard 3cm slab supports an eased edge for a modern square look, a quarter or half bullnose for a softer feel that resists chipping, or an ogee for traditional cabinetry. Full bullnose remains common on granite and reads well on darker stones where the rounded return catches light. Mitered buildups are less common on granite than on quartz, since a miter across a heavily patterned natural stone shows the joint wherever veining fails to align at the corner. When a client wants a chunky apron on granite, we usually recommend a laminated buildup with a bullnose or ogee return that visually absorbs the glue line.
What makes a granite exotic rather than commodity?
Rarity, block yield, and the difficulty of quarrying set the tier. Commodity granites, the familiar speckled tans and blacks, come out of high volume quarries in large blocks, ship constantly, and stay inexpensive. Exotics come from limited deposits, often with dramatic movement, translucency, or unusual mineral inclusions, and a single slab can cost more than an entire commodity kitchen. Exotics carry practical consequences too. Blocks are smaller, so slab sizes shrink and your layout may need an extra piece. Fissures and pits are natural features in many exotic stones and are not defects, though they should be pointed out before purchase. Second floor kitchens complicate matters further, since a heavy slab going up a switchback stair in an older Orange or Tustin home needs extra crew and sometimes a hoist.

Frequently asked questions
Does granite stain?
Yes, unsealed or worn granite can stain, especially light colored stones exposed to olive oil. The stain sits in the stone rather than on it, so it needs a poultice of baking soda or a commercial drawing paste rather than scrubbing. Keeping sealer current prevents almost all of it. Dark granites stain far less readily.
Can I cut directly on granite?
You can without damaging the stone, but you will ruin your knives. Granite runs about 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, harder than any kitchen blade, so the edge loses its bite quickly. Use a board. The bigger risk to the counter is a dropped cast iron pan on an edge or corner.
Are pits and fissures in my slab defects?
No, they are natural characteristics of quarried stone. Pits are small voids between mineral crystals, and fissures are hairline separations along a crystal boundary that do not pass through the slab. Both are visible on the rack, which is one more reason to inspect slabs in person. A crack, unlike a fissure, goes through.
Will the pattern match across a seam?
On slabs cut from the same block, yes, we can usually keep the movement flowing across a joint. It requires laying the pieces side by side in the shop and sacrificing some yield. Heavily veined exotics match best, while busy speckled granites hide the seam anyway because the eye has no line to follow.
What cleaners should I avoid on granite?
Skip anything acidic or abrasive. Vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, ammonia, and generic bathroom sprays strip sealer and can dull the polish over time. Warm water with a few drops of dish soap handles daily cleaning, and a pH neutral stone cleaner works for anything greasier. Avoid scouring powders entirely.
Is granite going out of style?
Granite lost share to quartz over the last decade, but it never left, and honed and leathered finishes have carried it into contemporary kitchens. The dated look people react to is usually a specific busy gold speckled stone from the early 2000s paired with a full bullnose. Quieter granites read as current.
Can granite crack from heat?
Thermal shock cracking is rare but possible at a weak point. Granite handles a hot pan without marking, yet a frozen item set on a sun warmed slab, or repeated extreme cycling at a sharp cooktop corner, can start a fracture. This is why cutout corners are radiused during fabrication rather than cut square.
