Which Built-Ins Actually Earn Their Space?

The best candidates are places where a room already wastes volume. Is Shop Built or Site Built the Right Approach?

Shop built means the boxes, face frames, doors, and drawers are fabricated and finished in a controlled space, then delivered and installed as units. Site built means the casework is assembled and finished inside the house. Shop work wins on finish quality by a wide margin. A sprayed catalyzed conversion varnish cures to a hard, chemically resistant film that a brush applied wall paint cannot approach, and it goes on in a booth without dust, pets, or overspray in the living room. Site building still has a place: odd geometry, tight access, under stair work, and anything scribed into a wildly irregular opening. Most projects mix both. The joint between a shop cabinet and a crooked wall is handled with scribe strips and filler pieces, applied strips of matching material planed to follow the wall so the reveal stays consistent. Medium density fiberboard has no grain and no seasonal movement, which makes it the right pick for paint grade door panels and applied moldings where a wood grain telegraph would show through paint. It is heavy, it swells if it gets wet, and it will not hold a screw in the edge without special fasteners. Solid poplar is the usual paint grade choice for face frames and stiles because it machines cleanly and takes primer well. Core selection matters for doors: MDF core stays flatter, veneer core stays lighter, and weight decides how heavy the hinge has to be. Exposed plywood edges get covered with iron on or preglued veneer edge banding for painted work, or with a solid hardwood edge for stained work, which also protects the corner from chipping and allows a slight roundover.

How Does the Casework Get Built and Anchored?

Two construction systems dominate. Face frame casework applies a hardwood frame to the front of the box, stiffening the opening and giving a traditional reveal around doors. Frameless, or European, casework skips that frame and relies on a thicker box with full overlay doors, yielding slightly more interior space and a cleaner modern line. Either way the box should be 3/4 inch material, with sides joined by dados and rabbets rather than butt joints and screws, and a back captured in a groove so the case cannot rack. Shelving is where cheap built-ins fail. A 3/4 inch plywood shelf spanning 36 inches will visibly deflect under a run of hardcover books, so spans stay near 30 to 32 inches or the shelf gains a thicker edge band, a stiffener, or a center support. Pin holes drilled at 32 millimeter spacing keep shelves genuinely adjustable. Any HDMI, network, or speaker cable run inside a wall has to be rated for in wall use, commonly CL2 or CL3, and pulling a spare conduit chase between the display location and the equipment bay lets future gear be swapped without opening drywall. Heat is the failure most people overlook. Receivers and game consoles sitting in a sealed cabinet cook themselves, so component bays get vent slots top and bottom, a perforated or open back, or a small thermostatically controlled fan. Grommeted pass throughs move cable between bays without pinching. Lighting is the last layer.   5. Delivery, installation, and scribing

    2 to 5 days

    Units are set, shimmed level, scribed to the walls with filler strips, fastened into studs, then doors, drawers, and hardware are hung and adjusted.

  6. Finish work and punch list

    2 to 5 days

    Trim returns, caulking, filler touch up, and final coats close things out. Lighting is aimed and dimming is tested against the driver before sign off.

Should the cabinets be built in a shop or on site?
