A sequence that starts below the finished surfaces and works up. What Are the Code Requirements for a Basement Bedroom?

The demanding one is emergency escape. Any basement sleeping room requires an emergency escape and rescue opening, meaning a window with roughly 5.7 square feet of clear opening, a minimum 24 inch clear height, a minimum 20 inch clear width and a sill no more than 44 inches above the floor. Below grade that usually means cutting a new window opening in a concrete or masonry wall and excavating a window well, which must be sized to allow the window to open fully and, where it exceeds 44 inches deep, must include a permanently affixed ladder. The well also needs drainage so it does not fill during a Southern California storm. Beyond egress, you need 7 feet of ceiling height, interconnected smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detection outside the sleeping area, ground fault protection where required, and mechanical ventilation for a space with limited operable windows.
