A kitchen is not a nice to have in an ADU, it is the legal element that distinguishes a dwelling unit from a bonus room. Every full ADU requires a kitchen, and every junior ADU requires at least an efficiency kitchen, which means kitchen design is where ADU projects most often collide with code, with electrical capacity, and with the physical reality of a small footprint. A well designed 350 square foot studio kitchen can feel genuinely generous; a badly designed one in the same space feels like a hallway with appliances. We plan ADU kitchens around three constraints simultaneously: what the code requires, what the electrical service can carry, and how someone actually cooks in a compact unit.

What Layout Works Best in a Compact ADU Kitchen?

Single wall and galley layouts dominate ADU work, and for good reason. A single wall kitchen of eight to eleven linear feet fits along one side of a studio, keeps all plumbing and gas or electrical in one wall cavity, and leaves the rest of the floor plan open. A galley works when the ADU has a defined kitchen alcove with circulation on both sides, and it delivers substantially more counter and storage than a single wall in the same square footage. L shaped layouts appear in one bedroom units of 600 square feet and up, where a return leg can double as a peninsula and eating area. What almost never works in an ADU is an island: it consumes the circulation clearance that makes a small unit livable, and the code required clearances in front of appliances and between opposing runs leave no room for it below roughly 900 square feet.

What Electrical Does an ADU Kitchen Require?

More than homeowners expect, and this is where ADU kitchens collide with older Orange County electrical services. A code compliant kitchen needs at minimum two dedicated 20 amp small appliance branch circuits serving the counter receptacles, a dedicated circuit for the refrigerator, a dedicated circuit for the dishwasher, a dedicated circuit for the disposal, a circuit for the range hood or over range microwave, and either a 240 volt circuit for an electric range or cooktop or a gas connection with an ignition circuit. Counter receptacles require ground fault protection, and most kitchen circuits now require arc fault protection as well. Add heating, cooling and water heating and a compact ADU can easily require an 80 to 100 amp subpanel. Running that load calculation before design, not after, is how you find out whether a service upgrade is in your budget.

Should an ADU Kitchen Be Gas or All Electric?

We build most Orange County ADU kitchens all electric, and the reasoning is practical rather than ideological. Running a new gas line to a detached unit means trenching, a meter or manifold decision, pressure testing and a separate inspection, all of which cost money and schedule. Induction cooking performs extremely well, responds faster than gas, and pairs naturally with a heat pump water heater and heat pump HVAC for a straightforward Title 24 compliance path. Some Orange County jurisdictions have adopted reach codes that favor or effectively require electrification in new construction, which pushes the same direction. Where gas still makes sense is an attached ADU or conversion where an existing gas line is already in the wall and the homeowner strongly prefers a gas range. Induction does require compatible cookware, which is worth mentioning to a client before selections rather than after.

What Ventilation Is Required Over the Cooking Surface?

Kitchen ventilation is a code requirement, not a preference, and it is a common source of correction notices. California requires mechanical exhaust ventilation for the cooking surface in a dwelling unit, and the required airflow depends on whether the hood is a range hood over the cooktop or another exhaust configuration, with different rates for enclosed versus open kitchens. In a compact ADU, the enclosed kitchen distinction matters because small units frequently qualify. The practical challenge is ducting: a detached ADU needs a clear exterior termination path with proper backdraft damper and cap, and in a garage conversion or JADU the shortest exterior wall run is often on the opposite side of the room from where the cooktop naturally wants to go. Recirculating hoods are permitted in some configurations but do not satisfy every requirement, so we resolve ventilation at the plan stage.

How Do You Size Appliances for a Small Unit?

By footprint first, then by household. Twenty four inch appliances are the ADU workhorse: a 24 inch range, a 24 inch dishwasher and a 24 inch counter depth refrigerator preserve counter space and circulation that 30 and 36 inch equipment consumes. In units under roughly 400 square feet, a 24 inch under counter refrigerator, a two burner induction cooktop and a combination convection microwave often deliver better usable kitchen than full size equipment crammed into the same wall. Above 700 square feet, a 30 inch range becomes reasonable. Two details matter regardless of size. First, verify the appliance will physically fit through the ADU entry door and any interior turn, which sounds obvious and is a real problem in narrow conversions. Second, confirm the counter depth refrigerator specification early, since standard depth units project past a 25 inch counter and disrupt the whole elevation.

  • Dedicated electrical circuits: Small appliance branch circuits, refrigerator, dishwasher, disposal, hood and range circuits with ground fault and arc fault protection as required.
  • Plumbing rough and finish: Supply and drain lines, vent, angle stops, disposal, dishwasher connection and the sink and faucet set and tested.
  • Mechanical ventilation: Range hood or exhaust system sized to the required airflow, ducted to a proper exterior termination with backdraft damper and cap.
  • Appliance installation and commissioning: Range or cooktop, hood or microwave, refrigerator and dishwasher installed, connected, leveled and tested before handover.
  • Lighting and finish detail: Ceiling and under cabinet lighting on appropriate switching, plus toe kick, scribe and caulk detailing that makes a compact kitchen look built rather than assembled.

    Backsplash, appliance installation, plumbing and electrical trim, lighting, hardware, caulk and touch up, then final inspection of the kitchen alongside the rest of the unit.

Typical timeline: ADU kitchen installation typically spans six to twelve weeks within the larger project, from layout finalization through final inspection. The controlling item is almost always countertop template to install, which usually runs two to three weeks after cabinets are set. Custom or long lead appliances can extend the finish phase.

What moves the price

  • Cabinet grade and configuration: Stock cabinets in standard widths cost a fraction of semi custom boxes with specified interiors, soft close hardware and finished end panels, even across the same linear footage.
  • Countertop material and edge: Laminate, entry level quartz, premium quartz and natural stone span a wide range, and waterfall ends or mitered edges add fabrication labor on top of material.
  • Appliance package: A basic 24 inch range, hood and refrigerator versus an induction range, integrated hood and counter depth panel ready refrigerator is one of the widest swings in the whole kitchen.
  • Ventilation routing difficulty: A cooktop on an exterior wall ducts out in a few feet. A cooktop on an interior wall requires a long duct run, sometimes through joists or a soffit, with a larger blower to overcome it.
  • Electrical service headroom: If the load calculation shows the existing service cannot carry the kitchen plus the rest of the unit, the required subpanel or service upgrade lands in this scope.
  • Plumbing routing on slab: A sink located near the existing drain stub is inexpensive. Relocating the sink to the opposite wall of a slab on grade unit means saw cutting and trenching concrete.

Does every ADU need a full kitchen?

Every full ADU needs a kitchen, since it is the element that makes the space a legal dwelling unit. Junior ADUs may use an efficiency kitchen instead, which state law defines as a cooking facility with appliances, a food preparation counter and storage cabinets, a meaningfully lower bar than a full kitchen.

How many electrical circuits does an ADU kitchen need?

At minimum, two dedicated 20 amp small appliance branch circuits for counter receptacles, plus dedicated circuits for the refrigerator, dishwasher, disposal and hood or microwave, and a 240 volt circuit for an electric range. Ground fault and arc fault protection apply per current code.
